I’ve always had soft spot for steam trains. I have many childhood memories of family days out to see them. The only time I’d been to York before moving here for a job was to visit the National Railway Museum. I vividly remember arriving at York train station with it's distinctive Victorian arches and it's glass and iron roof. 

 

I decided to base the design based on the engine without the smoke deflectors that were added in 1990. I’ve also used artistic license and printed the whole of the Flying Scotsman in black, rather than Apple Green. It was actually painted totally in black in the wartime years.

The Flying Scotsman was originally built in Doncaster for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923.

It was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley as part of the A1 class series.
