Multi-block linocut printing workshop
Learn how to make a two-colour linocut print using the multi-block technique.
During the day you will learn about the process, then carve and hand-print your design, using SoftCut lino and oil-based ink. The focus of the workshops will be learning how to use the multi-block technique. In order to do this in one day, designs will need to be simple, to be able to carve them in time. You will have approximately 60 minutes to carve each lino block.
What you will learn
Understand how to create a simple two-colour multi-block print.
How to plan a design for multi-block printing.
How to register (line up) multiple blocks of lino for one design.
How to make a registration device at home.
Materials and equipment
Lino cutting equipment will be provided for each student to use on the day, including the use of pre-made registration devices and registration tabs.
Two A6 (105 x 148mm) SoftCut lino blocks.
A reasonable amount of paper.
There will be space and equipment for 4 ink colours. I suggest that we use 2 tones of blue and 2 tones of green. Alternative colours will be available if everyone in the group is happy with them on the day.
When printing multiple colours you need to leave the ink to dry between overlapping colours. In this one-day workshop, we will be using oil-based inks. I normally leave 2-3 days between colours before printing the next colour.
Colours can be printed on top of each other on the same day but will print a little soft focus and not as crisp as when they are left to dry between each colour. If the colours are adjacent to each other and do not overlap, they can be printed in one day and stay crisp.
Workshops will be held in my studio in Holgate, York. Free on-street parking. Bikes can be stored securely.
9.30am – 4.30pm. Arrive anytime from 9.00am for a 9.30am start.

Before the workshop think about the image you would like to design and linocut. This could be a favourite landscape photo, flower or tree image. Please bring some inspiration, a Pinterest mood board or sketches along on the day. Ideas to follow will also be available on the day if needed. Some people like to plan their designs before the day. This will give you more time to carve and print.
Materials and equipment
Lino cutting equipment will be provided for each student to use on the day. A reasonable amount of paper and ink will also be provide.
I use oil-based inks which will stain clothing. Please wear old clothes. Aprons and plastic gloves will be provided.
