LINOCUT WORKSHOPS

General workshop information

Workshops take place in my home print studio in Holgate, York. The aim is to create a relaxed, welcoming space where you can slow down, learn something new and enjoy a day immersed in printmaking.

What is included

Tools and materials:

  • All lino cutting tools and printing equipment are provided for use during the workshop.

  • A reasonable amount of paper and ink is included so that you can experiment, learn and leave with a collection of your own hand-printed work.

Refreshments:

  • Tea, herbal teas and coffee are available throughout the day. At the end of the session, homemade cake is served.

  • Please inform us of any dietary requirements in advance. We will always do our best to accommodate where possible.

  • If you prefer a specific type of milk, please bring this with you.

  • Gluten-free cakes are available on request and are made using gluten-free ingredients. However, they are prepared in a home kitchen that is not a dedicated gluten-free environment, so cross-contamination is possible. These cakes are not suitable for individuals with coeliac disease, severe gluten intolerance or serious food allergies.

  • We are unable to cater for diabetic dietary requirements or complex food allergies.

What is not included

Lunch is not provided. Please bring a packed lunch. There are local shops nearby if needed.

Workshop location

  • Workshops are held in Michelle’s studio in Holgate, York.

  • Free on-street parking is available. Please park considerately and be mindful of neighbours.

  • If you are arriving by bike, secure storage is available in the carport.

  • Full address details and directions will be sent in your pre-course email.

Arrival time

You are welcome to arrive up to 20 minutes before the workshop begins to settle into the studio and give me time to make you a cup of tea or coffee.

Workshops start promptly at the advertised time.

Suitable clothing

We use traditional oil-based inks, which will permanently stain clothing.

Please wear old clothes that you do not mind getting marked. Aprons are provided, but ink tends to travel.

Pre-course details

Full pre-course information, including directions and what to expect on the day, will be sent approximately two weeks before your workshop.

Age restrictions

Due to the use of sharp linocutting tools, workshops are suitable for adults aged 16 and over.

Colours
  • Linocut printing is a handmade process, and variations in colour and detail will occur. This adds to the individuality of each print.

  • Original prints are scanned and digitised or photographed. I do my utmost to ensure these reflect the colours in the original print. While every effort has been made to show items accurately on our website, slight colour variations may occur. Colour variations may also depend on the calibration and settings of individual computer screens.

Ink and print lightfastness
  • The oil-based inks I use for original prints are highly colourfast. However, I recommend keeping the prints out of direct sunlight or framing them with UV-protective glass to preserve longevity. For more details on ink durability, please refer to the Hawthorn Printmaker Supplies website.

  • A commercial printer digitally prints my greeting cards. While the quality is high, please note that these prints may fade over time, particularly if exposed to light.

Sizes

All measurements quoted are approximate.

GIFT VOUCHERS

Gift vouchers purchased from Michelle Hughes Design can be redeemed for in-person workshops in my studio, linocut prints, and cards. They cannot be used for my online courses because a third party hosts them.

The person buying a workshop voucher is responsible for informing the recipient about the terms and conditions, including the cancellation policy for in-person linocut workshops.

ONLINE COURSES

A third party, Thinkific.com, hosts my online courses.   They provide us with an online platform to sell our online courses and services to you. For the terms and conditions, please see the individual online course pages:  Beginners guide to linocut printing and How to make a multi-block linocut print.
