Christmas card linocut printing workshop for improvers

Friday 2 October 2026

Last Friday, I spent the day teaching an improvers' linocut printing workshop, and we made Christmas cards! 🎄

Everyone had been to a workshop with me before, so it was a lovely opportunity to practise the skills they’d already learned and try something a little different.

By the end of the day, everyone had a set of eight hand-printed linocuts, ready to turn into their own handmade Christmas cards once the prints dried.

I love this time of year for making Christmas cards. There’s something rather lovely about sending a card you’ve designed, carved and printed yourself. Each one is a little different, and it feels extra special to give someone something you’ve made by hand.

Have you started making your Christmas cards yet?

“A friendly and supportive experience in a legendary studio. Michelle is such a talented and inspirational artist who explains and demonstrates clearly and never in a patronising way, even when you feel like you may have gone a little bit astray!” Dianne

“Great teaching and support from Michelle in a super studio. Lovely relaxed atmosphere.” Georgina

“Brilliant one-day Christmas workshop. Another step towards learning the art of lino print.” Janet

“Really enjoyable day!

A great supportive environment to develop ideas and skills. Michelle is great fun and a great teacher, and you go home with your printed cards too!” Shona

Try making your own linocut Christmas cards

If you’d like to try linocut Christmas card printing at home this year, I’ve added four Christmas card design templates, along with carving and printing demonstrations, to my online course, How to Make a Linocut Print for Beginners.

The course takes you through the basics of linocut printing step by step, so you can learn at your own pace and create your own handmade prints and Christmas cards.

About Michelle

I’m Michelle Hughes, a North Yorkshire landscape artist and printmaker based in York. My original linocut prints are inspired by the Yorkshire Coast, Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and the wider British countryside.

I gather ideas and take photographs while walking and cycling, then bring them back to my garden studio in York. I simplify my photographs into bold, stylised designs, carve them into lino blocks and hand-print each limited edition on my etching press using oil-based inks.
