Swaledale II is an original linocut print depicting a view along the beautiful Swaledale valley in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Swaledale is known for its distinctive field barns, or locally known “cow’us”, which dot the landscape alongside traditional drystone walls. These barns were built in the hay fields, allowing farmers to store hay close to where their livestock grazed during the harsh winter months.
Inspiration
Many summers, I’ve cycled from Reeth through the Swaledale valley, past Muker, Keld, and up to Tan Hill. One of my favourite views, and a regular lunch stop, is a bench between Thwaite and Angram, overlooking this timeless landscape. This print captures the essence of that peaceful spot.
How it’s Made
Each print is hand-printed in Yorkshire using traditional linocut techniques. Swaledale II was created using the multi-block process, with five individually carved lino blocks, one for each colour. Each layer is printed by hand using oil-based inks on soft white, acid-free paper, with several days of drying between layers.
