An original linocut print of a singing wren perched on a tree branch, hand-printed in indigo blue, teal and soft green.

This original print is a section of the linocut print created for the cover of my book, Printing Birds and Wildlife in Linocut. The print has a deckled edge and is float-mounted onto matching paper.

Inspiration

The Eurasian wren is one of Britain’s smallest birds. I’m lucky to see wrens regularly in my own garden here in York. Although wrens are one of the UK's most common garden birds, they're hard to spot. I often hear their distinctive loud chirping and singing before I spot them in a hedge. One spring, a pair nested in my garden, and I spotted the two juvenile wrens waiting to be fed from my studio window.

How it’s Made

Printed by hand in Yorkshire using traditional linocut techniques, this artwork is created using the multi-block process and four hand-carved lino blocks, one for each colour. Each colour is individually printed with oil-based ink on soft white, acid-free paper, with several days of drying between layers.

How to Take Care of Your Original Print

This original print is created using professional, high-quality oil-based inks and watercolours, along with acid-free paper and mounts. While the inks and watercolours have excellent lightfastness, I recommend hanging your print out of direct sunlight. Read more on my FAQs page
