Beginners' linocut workshops - Winter 2026

Updated: Mar 25

I'll add photos from each workshop as I teach my beginner's linocut workshops through the winter. If you’d like to learn how to make a linocut print, see my linocut workshops and online courses page for links to each course and workshop.

Thursday 8 January 2026 - Introduction to linocut print workshop

Kicking off my first linocut workshop of the year with a private booking and four wonderful prints. Tim carved a print of a diesel train; Alsion’s print was based on her drawing. Andrew created a linocut print of Flamborough Lighthouse, and Jo created a print of an ark at sea.

One for diesel train buffs. Do you reckon we got the ink colour right for the Rail Blue?

I wish I could remember word for word what Andrew and Tim said when they peeled back their very first prints, but it made me smile from ear to ear. It’s one of the many things which make teaching so rewarding.

“Great fun and very rewarding. Michelle is the welcoming host and teacher, highly recommended.”

“Great fun. Really absorbing. Very satisfying! Michelle is a lovely host and teacher.”

“Perfect relaxing day with a real chance of feeling like an artist by the end of it!”

“It was an enjoyable and knowledgeable course, which was fun to do. It was a fantastic experience, thank you.”

Friday 9 January 2026 - Introduction to linocut print workshop

Three more fabulous linocut prints. It’s been a lovely, chilled-out day, snug in my cosy studio. Stephine carved a linocut print of sea urchins. Stephen's linocut print was based on a photo he’d taken of the Old Man of Storr on the Isle of Skye, and Lise’s print was inspired by a greetings card. After swapping stories about yoga, Lise’s fox print was aptly named Downward Fox!

I’m thankful that the snow has stayed away and not affected anyone's travel so far.

Get well soon, Hilary. Hope you can make it another time.

“Learning the techniques of Lino cut from drawing a design to creating a lineup plate and producing a final print. Learning how to use the cutting tools and applying the ink.”

“Absorbing, satisfying fun. Michelle shows you everything you need to know very interesting, hands-on and just a supportive and fun workshop.”

“Satisfying, enjoyable, absorbing. Michelle makes the whole experience easy to follow with clear instructions and is very supportive.”

About the author

Michelle Hughes is a North Yorkshire landscape artist. Much of her work depicts the Yorkshire landscape, including the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, as well as the Yorkshire coast.

Michelle loves exploring the British countryside by bike or on foot, camera in hand, capturing ideas for her next prints. Back in her garden studio, Michelle creates simple but stylised silhouettes based on her photographs and carves these shapes into lino. She hand prints with an etching press, using oil-based inks to create tonal blocks of colour.

Michelle’s original linocut prints are limited editions.
